What car key programming is
Car key programming is the step that pairs a key, transponder, smart key, or remote to a compatible vehicle so the car will accept it. Locksmith Serge is a mobile lock and key service. When the job is a fit, we come to the vehicle in Los Angeles and do that pairing on site.
Many modern keys contain a transponder chip. The car’s immobilizer looks for that chip before it will start. A smart key or a remote that must be learned is the same idea: the vehicle has to recognize the unit. Programming is that recognition step. It is not the same as shaping a metal blade, and it is not a lockout.

Programming versus cutting a key
Cutting or shaping a key is replacement. Programming is making the car accept the key or fob. You can need one, the other, or both. If you do not have a usable key yet, start with a replacement car key. If the missing piece is the remote hardware, start with a replacement key fob. Come here when the unit exists and the vehicle does not recognize it.

What the car does now
Cranks but will not start, no crank, doors work but start does not — those details help more than a general “it is not programmed.”

Transponder, smart key, and remote procedures differ by vehicle. A rough year is better than none. We still may need to see the car.

Why would a new key need programming?
Many keys include a transponder or smart function. The car will not start until it recognizes that unit. Cutting the blade is only part of the job on those vehicles. Whether your car needs pairing depends on the year, make, and model.
What is a transponder key?
A transponder key has a chip the vehicle reads. If the chip is missing or not learned, the immobilizer can keep the car from starting even when the blade turns. Transponder key programming is teaching the car to accept that chip. Not every key has one.
Can you program a key if I have no working key at all?
Sometimes, and sometimes a new key has to be made first. No working key makes the vehicle details more important. We will not promise every car can be programmed from a blank start. Call with the year, make, and model and what you still have.
Is smart-key programming the same as cutting a metal key?
No. Smart-key programming is pairing. Cutting a metal key is replacement. A smart key may have little or no blade. If you need the unit itself, that is a key or fob replacement question. If the unit exists and the car ignores it, that is programming.
How do I know if my problem is programming or a dead battery?
A dead fob battery can look like a pairing failure. If a fresh battery restores lock and unlock, programming may not be the issue. If the key is new, or the car never learned the unit, pairing is more likely. Describe what you already tried. We stay cautious on the phone because both can look similar.
Do you program keys for every car brand?
No. Compatibility varies by vehicle. We do not treat every brand or year the same. Share the year, make, and model and we can say what looks possible. Some cars still need a dealer or a part we cannot supply.
